The fringing reef, which has created exciting structures like Hero's Cave, the Tubes, the Docks and the Blowhole for power packed diving, is amazing and fascinating in itself. Still, all this is topped by a kaleidoscope of colour and beauty from colourful gorgonia, sea fans and soft coral.
Giant manta rays live here in such abundance that divers are continually swimming with them, turtles are frequently seen and shoals of exotic fish glide gracefully through coral canyons.
Drift Diving (Beach or Boat Entry)
One way to cover a large area of reef underwater to see as much as possible without exerting a whole lot of energy, is drift diving.

Lady Elliot like so many other islands and reefs in the southern section are subject to currents. Diving in a current is difficult only if you let it be in control, while harnessing all that power and applying it in your favour can be one of the most pleasurable ways to dive.
Drift diving must be carried out only at the outer edge of inner reef running parallel to the island, from the lighthouse to a couple of marker buoys at its northern end. Best times being about 2 hours after high tide, currents then run from the lighthouse, northward, whilst rest of the time predominant ocean movement is in an opposite direction.
