Baffle Creek is at the southern boundary of the Discovery Coast and was first occupied by settlers in 1853 when Rosedale Station was built by a family from Irland. Later, in 1908 a settlement of mostly German emigrants was established in Wartburg. The Wartburg church is testimony of the pioneering past of this area.

The largest river estuary in Queensland is Baffle Creek. Its tributaries consist of miles and miles of waterways which were most important to the local industries in years gone by. Today Baffle Creek is more and more becoming an unique attraction for recreation: boating, sailing, canoeing, fishing.

Rules Beach and Wartburg are tourist orientated with accommodation units being built, a caravan park in operation, a golf course and a camel park ready for visitors. There is, further inland, a steadily growing industry of small crop production.

With its close proximity to the Deepwater National Park, Rules Beach is also ideal for the self-sufficient camper. The Rules Beach store (a fine example of a 'Queenslander' residence) provides campers with appropriate gear and provisions. Bush walking through the National Park or 4-wheel driving is an experience not to be missed.
